Summer Teen Volunteer Program

Your Meaningful Journey Begins

This summer, we’re launching Valley’s FIRST Summer Teen Volunteer Program at our main hospital campus. The program offers high school students the opportunity to get firsthand experience in a healthcare environment through meaningful interactions with patients, visitors, and our Valley staff. 

As a volunteer, you'll develop valuable skills—such as interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and customer service—that matter both now and in your future. You can also build lasting friendships with fellow teen volunteers who share your interests in healthcare and community service. Together, you’ll become an important part of how Valley carries out our mission of caring for our community like family.  

Healthcare Career Exploration

As part of our Teen Volunteer Program, you'll have an opportunity to participate in knowledge sharing sessions throughout the summer—meeting with clinicians, medical staff, and other Valley professionals. These interactive discussions will give you an inside look at various healthcare careers, the education paths that lead to them, and what it takes to succeed as a healthcare professional. It's a unique opportunity to ask questions and gain insights directly from experts working in the field you may one day join!

Volunteer Positions

Our volunteer positions will focus on support services and will not include patient care or clinical work. You’ll provide thoughtful assistance in our Wayfinding (escorting) and Information Desk (customer service) areas by:

• Greeting and welcoming patients and visitors with a friendly smile
• Providing directions to hospital departments and facilities
• Escorting patients and visitors safely to their destinations
• Answering questions and offering helpful information about hospital services
• Assisting with wheelchair coordination

Program Details

Here’s what you need to know:

• Program dates: June 30 – August 15 (6 weeks)
• Online application timeline: April 1 – April 18, or when all spots are filled
• Location: Valley Medical Center’s main campus in Renton
• Spots available: 30 positions
• Schedule: One 3-hour shift per week, Monday through Friday (9 AM – 12 PM or 12 PM – 3 PM)
• Stipend: $6 per shift toward snacks and refreshments

Requirements & Training   

To join our Summer Teen Volunteer Program, you’ll need to:

• Be 16 – 18 years old as of June 30, 2025
• Complete an online application (one reference is required)
• Complete a phone screening interview
• Pass a background check (parent/guardian consent required)
• Submit a completed Teen Volunteer Agreement (signed by parent/guardian)
• Attend a two-hour orientation and training session
• Commit to one 3-hour shift per week from June 30 – August 15
