Hamilton “Sawyer” Gillespie, MD, is board-certified in cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular disease. He treats all manner of arrhythmias – fast and slow heart rhythms – from atrial fibrillation to ventricular tachycardia, as well as all manner of devices.
Originally from the San Francisco area, Dr. Gillespie attended medical school at University of Washington, where he also performed his Internal Medicine residency. Subsequently, he worked as an attending physician in the Harborview Medical Center Emergency Department for several years before attending his General Cardiology fellowship at the University of Utah. He then returned to UW for a cardiac electrophysiology fellowship where he served as chief fellow his final year. He is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society and previously served as Clinical Assistant Professor at UW. He also worked as a staff electrophysiologist at Legacy Health in Portland, OR.
In approaching his practice, Dr Gillespie views his role first as an educator to help patients understand their own cardiovascular health, the disorder that has led them his office, and then the implications and treatment options going forward. Cardiac electrophysiology offers, in many cases, the possibility of definitive treatment of a variety of disorders from ‘nuisance’ to life threatening arrhythmias. He focuses his approach on being thoughtful and deliberate, with the emphasis on providing the highest-quality and most appropriate care possible.
Outside of work Dr. Gillespie enjoys time in the outdoors: running, backpacking, skiing. He is also increasingly interested in community involvement and engagement. He is married with one child, and an aging bearded collie.
