Annual LGBTQIA2S+ Health Symposium

3/15/2024

Providence Swedish’s Seventh Annual LGBTQIA2S+ Health Symposium will focus on the provision of primary preventive care, sexual health counseling, reproductive health, and family planning for our LGBTQIA2S+ communities. The current climate has made it difficult to provide care to LGBTQIA2S+ people given the increasing number of proposed legislations to enact bans and restrictions on lifesaving
healthcare services. This occurs despite the increased visibility and understanding of the LGBTQIA2S+ community in addition to the creation of LGBTQIA2S+ healthcare curricula in medical schools and residency programs. Healthcare professionals need more education about how to support and provide healthcare to LGBTQIA2S+ communities to improve the medical care for these patients.

Planned in partnership with providers from the Seattle region, this conference aims to hold a forum for discussion to educate clinicians in providing the following care for our LGBTQIA2S+ patients:
• Primary preventive services such as cancer screening
• Sexual health counseling to LGBTQIA2S+ patients of all ages
• Family planning and reproductive health
• Preconception, prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care

Intended Audience
The course content is intended for all healthcare professionals including physicians, ARNPs, PAs, nurses, allied health professionals, administrative leaders, patient health advocates, medical students, and residents/fellows who encounter LGBTQIA2S+ patients in their practice. It is especially recommended for
those who provide primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.

Learning Objectives
By attending this course, participants will provide better patient care through an increased ability to:
• Provide preventive and primary care services to LGBTQIA2S+ patients
• Offer preexposure and postexposure prophylaxis to help decrease the risk of acquiring HIV
• Provide sexual health information to LGBTQIA2S+ people of all ages
• Identify the unique needs of LGBTQIA2S+ communities in the realms of reproductive health and family planning including the preconception, prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.
