What is neuromuscular medicine?

Neuromuscular medicine is a broad sub-specialty of neurology focused on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the peripheral nervous system and muscle.

Example of conditions we manage include:

  • Peripheral neuropathies of all kinds including autoimmune neuropathy such as CIDP and inherited neuropathies such as Charcot Marie Tooth disease
  • Myasthenia gravis and other disorders of the neuromuscular junction
  • Adult onset muscular dystrophies such as myotonic dystrophy, fascioscapulohumeral dystrophy, and limb-girdle muscular dystrophies
  • Acquired disorders of muscle including toxic and immune mediated causes
  • Motor neuron disease
  • Muscle cramps and fasciculations

How are neuromuscular disorders diagnosed?

Nerve conduction studies and electromyography play a large role in the diagnosis of many neuromuscular disorders.

In addition, we often utilize genetic testing, metabolic/nutritional studies, and autoantibody testing to aid in diagnosing many neuromuscular disorders.

How are neuromuscular disorders treated?

We treat neuromuscular disorders in a variety of ways depending on the underlying cause.

Examples of treatment modalities include immunomodulatory treatments such as IVIG infusions and corticosteroids. We also utilize medications focused on symptomatic relief and we work closely with physical and occupational therapists to provide supportive care to our patients.

What conditions are not routinely treated by neuromuscular specialists?

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic pain
  • Degenerative spine disease
  • POTS
