Surgeons and Proceduralists: Your Patients and Getting COVID Test Results

All procedures and surgeries at Valley require a negative COVID test. Many providers on our medical staff send patients for testing prior to a scheduled procedure/surgery. It is extremely important that patients are aware of the steps to get the results of their COVID test and know what to do if their result is positive. Here are the steps, these are being sent in flyer format for providers to give their patients as well:

1. If a patient is not already a Valley MyChart user, a registration code will be provided to them by the Mobile Care Unit personnel with directions to sign up as soon as possible.

2. MyChart will send the result of their COVID-19 test via email link as soon as it's processed by the lab. This typically happens within 24 hours.

3. The patient will need to log into MyChart to see the results.

4. Patients must have a "not detected" result to proceed with surgery.

5. If the result is "Detected" that means they are COVID positive and are being directed to:

  • Call their surgeon's office right away. If it's the weekend, they should leave a message regarding their result. The surgeon or office staff should contact them.
  • NOT come to the hospital until they talk with their surgeon or surgeon's office staff for guidance.
  • Quarantine themselves from others. Even if they don't have COVID-19 symptoms, they can still transmit the virus.
  • Seek advice from their primary care provider.
6. If the surgeon deems the procedure urgent or emergent, they will help coordinate the next steps. Otherwise, the patient will need to recover from COVID-19 before having surgery.
