Re-Testing Not Recommended for COVID-Recovered Patients for 90 days After Their Initial COVID-19+ Test
Because the PCR test may continue to be positive due to persistent shedding of non-viable viral RNA rather than reinfection, retesting is not recommended for COVID-recovered patients for the first 90 days after their initial COVID-19 positive test. Repeat testing should be guided by clinical symptoms compatible with COVID. For persons who remain asymptomatic during this 90-day period, retesting is unlikely to yield useful information, even if the person had close contact with an infected person. For persons who develop new symptoms consistent with COVID-19 during the 90-day period, if an alternative etiology cannot be identified by a provider, then the person may warrant retesting; consultation with Infectious diseases or Infection Control experts is recommended.
