What is Mohs surgery?

Mohs micrographic surgery is a tissue-sparing technique useful for treating basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers of the head and neck, or of recurrent, aggressive or large skin cancers on any area. The advantages of the procedure are achieving a high cure rate (>99%) with a smaller amount of tissue removed, thus a smaller defect to repair.

Where is Mohs surgery provided at Valley?

The Dermatology Clinic offers Mohs surgery as one of their comprehensive services.

Mohs surgeon, Cynthia Knutson, MD, has over 20 years of experience performing the Mohs procedure in private practice in Flagstaff, AZ, and has been a fellow of the American Society for Mohs Surgery (ASMS) since 1999. She is excited and grateful for the opportunity to provide this needed service to the VMC community.

Mohs histotechnician, Amanda Richards, BS, worked as a research technologist prior to joining our team. Her attention to detail is obvious in her work. She was trained by the ASMS in 2019.

What is the referral process?

If you have a patient with a face, scalp, ear, or neck lesion that is suspicious for cancer, please refer them to one of our dermatologists for diagnosis or use the E-consult* service. With any biopsy-proven tumors, please use E-consult* or contact Dr. Knutson directly via Epic messaging or Cynthia_Knutson@valleymed.org with any questions. Note: for patients requiring closures of large defects, the clinic is working directly with Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons, a Valley affiliate group.
