Activity Coaching through Progressive Goal Attainment Program (PGAPTM)
When an injured worker has not returned to work after 4 weeks (but not more than 5 months) after the date of injury, it may be appropriate to refer the worker to Activity Coaching through the Progressive Goal Attainment Program coach. PGAP™ is an intervention and evidence-based treatment program for reducing disability.

Over a course of five to ten activity coaching sessions, injured workers progressively increase their activity level and transition from a poor level of activity to an employable level of activity and higher quality of life. Participants develop skills to manage their schedules and daily routines while preparing themselves for return to work, school or other avocational activities and roles.
Psychosocial barriers can be debilitating and take injured workers on a downward spiral of despair and inactivity, moving them further away from work and their identity as a productive worker. Catastrophic thinking or negative thought reactions, feelings of injustice, self-perceptions of disability versus ability and fear can be immobilizing. Targeting specific reactions and roles as part of activity coaching can reduce the impact of these barriers.
PGAP does not address pain as a contributor to disability. Studies show no significant different in pain levels with clients who participate in therapy or therapy and PGAP. However, PGAP clients have increased activity levels despite nominal changes in levels of pain. Active and engaged workers can be less likely to focus on pain as a barrier to return to work.
