Hospitalists

Hospitalists are doctors whose primary focus is care of the hospitalized patient. About 30,000 such physicians practice in over 60% of the hospitals in the nation today, providing smoother continuity of care for inpatients.

For adult inpatient care, Valley Medical Center partners with Sound Physicians, currently staffing 15 hospitalists, to care for adult inpatients. These physicians are trained in internal medicine, are present in the hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and are specialized in the care of hospitalized patients.

Patients who are seen by hospitalists will follow up with their regular doctors after leaving Valley Medical Center. Hospitalists do not see patients outside of the hospital. For pediatric patients, Valley Medical Center uses hospitalists specially trained in Pediatrics.

Hospitalists work in teams to coordinate care of the patient in the hospital and are responsible for ensuring that the patient's usual physician is informed about their progress. Hospitalists facilitate improved communication with patients, families and the patient’s primary care physician.
