    Biography

Raised on Florida’s southwest coast, Jeff Stone, MD, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and his medical degree from the University of Miami. After a three-year stint in the commissioned corps of the U.S. Public Health Service, Dr. Stone completed his surgical residency at Emory University in Atlanta in 1985. He practiced general surgery in Georgia, Montana, Tennessee and New Mexico before joining Valley Medical Center as an acute care surgeon.

Acute care surgery is new to Valley, but is a practice model that is rapidly being adopted across the country by hospitals of all sizes.

Dr. Stone says, “Essentially, it dedicates general surgeons—often referred to as hospitalist surgeons or surgicalists—to full time coverage of the ER and medical hospitalists’ needs. This frees surgeons with elective, office-based practices from the disruptions in their schedules necessitated by on-call responsibilities, and allows them to practice more efficiently and productively. As acute care surgeons generally do not do elective surgery, I enhance the practices of my elective surgeon colleagues.”

    Other Interests

Dr. Stone founded the new Trauma and Acute Care Surgery group at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, NM, where he met his wife, uro-gynecologist Cindi Lewis, MD. The two newlyweds shared a passion for the outdoors and enjoy cycling, hiking, camping, and skiing.

He says, “I got Cindi into scuba diving and she’s going to teach me how to rock climb even though I’m afraid of heights!”

The beauty of the Pacific Northwest and proximity of his two daughters—who attend college in Portland, OR—convinced the two to relocate to the evergreen state in 2014. “…As if I needed any more inducement to move to Seattle from New Mexico,” he says.

Dr. Stone and his wife also discovered a shared passion for doing surgical mission work. They’ve travelled to the Philippines, Nepal, and the Marshall Islands to provide life-saving or life-mending surgical care for patients.
